The new Sutton Local Plan Consultation (Regulation 18)
A local plan, prepared by all Councils in consultation with its community, sets out a vision and a framework for the future development of an area over 15 years. It addresses the current and future needs for homes, employment, town centre uses, education, health, open spaces, transport and infrastructure. Once in place, the Local Plan will become part of Sutton’s statutory development plan, setting out planning policies that will be used to determine planning applications and allocated sites where development will take place for all types of uses.
The Council is producing a new Local Plan which will guide development in the borough between 2024-2041. If you live or work in the borough, then we want your views on how we can encourage new housing and employment space that will help our borough prosper, whilst retaining the suburban character of Sutton, and all the things we love about our area.
Publication of the draft Local Plan for public consultation is anticipated in the Autumn 2025.
Issues and Preferred Options Consultation
The Council sought views on the Local Plan Issues and Preferred Options from 25 July 2024 to 26 September 2024.
This was the first consultation stage in preparing the new Local Plan. The Issues and Preferred Options document sets out the key issues which face the borough and options to address them. It also includes draft policies and potential development sites.
- Local Plan Issues and Preferred Options
- Local Plan Appendix: Changes to the Policies Map
- Sustainability Appraisal on the Local Plan Issues and Preferred Options Document
- Local Plan Issues and Preferred Options Equalities Impact Assessment Report 2024.pdf
- Public Notice Local Plan July 2024
- Potential Site Allocations 2024
In addition, the Council has published its Local Plan Review Evidence Library, which contains a number of important documents that have informed the preparation of this plan.
What happens next?
All comments received from the Issues and Preferred Options consultation will be considered and inform the preparation of a new Draft Sutton Local Plan. Further evidence may also be gathered, and this may result in new or revised policies being drafted. The new Draft Sutton Local Plan will be consulted upon in early 2025, where we will ask for further comments before submitting the Plan to an independent inspector for examination.
